Door Locks

Everybody wants security, no matter if you live alone, with roommates, family, and specially if you have children, you need to feel safe. Nobody wants to leave a place (your house, office or business) without locking that door. Also apply when you enter into one (like the bedroom or bathroom) and want to have some privacy, there you have some questions about Door Locks.

The key to getting the most out of your visit from a locksmith is understanding the different types of door locks that you need to install or repair ahead of time. Following next, there is a list of commonly kinds of products about door locks that we could find on the market.

Door Knob Lock Set:

A door knob is actually a handle used for opening and closing a door. Door knobs are, many a times, sold as complete lock sets, porcelain or crystal door knob/rosette assemblies are provided for both sides of the door, and passage/privacy sets include a latch, faceplate and strikeplate. Porcelain knobs turn function into style. The knob is fitted to a shank, made of either brass or any metal. Brass door locks are the most popular kind of door knob lock sets.

Deadbolts:

Deadbolts are defined as a bolt on a lock that is moved by turning a key or knob without activation of a spring. Deadbolts are available as a single or double cylinder, and used almost exclusively on exterior door applications, but can be used as interior door locks when added security is required. The only difference between the two types of cylinders is the double cylinder deadbolt is operated by a key on both sides of the door; whereas the single cylinder deadbolt operates with a key on the exterior and a knob or thumb turn on the interior. Double cylinder deadbolts should be used when there is glass in your door or a window is near enough to the door that it could be broken and someone could reach in and turn the knob. Deadbolt door locks are also known as "Dead Locks".

Price Range: US$13.49 - US$66.98 / £7.25 - £10.59

Mortise Locks:

Mortise door locks are considered to be generally found in older architectural applications, a fore runner to the bored cylindrical locks that are primarily used today. However, mortise locks are still used in high security business applications and are becoming more popular in upscale commercial and residential construction. A mortise lock requires a pocket (the mortise) to be cut into the edge of the door where the lock will be fitted. One of the strongest styles of door locks, a mortise lock makes it difficult to force open a door because it is fitted into the thickness of the door. Cut into the doors edge, only the faceplate remains visible when the door is open. They could be a simple Mortise with a Cylinder and no knob or a completely stylish Entryset.

Price Range: Basic Mortise Lock US$9.29 - US$27.95 / £4.99 - £15.04, Mortise Entrysets US$192.00 - US$208.00 / £103.32 - £112.00

Picking the right door lock for the security of a home is necessary. Impact resistance should be an important aspect of selecting a door lock. Door locks should have key control because using locks with key control does not allow anyone to copy keys except you or whomsoever you designate.

The level of security a lock set offers depends on its construction. You could have only a key in the knob or handle, but a burglar can easily foil it. If you want more security, door locks should be installed with a minimum of one inch beyond the door's edge and be made of case-hardened steel.
